Sooner or later it was bound to occur to a major food writer that there was a need for a comprehensive history of dining out in America, and we can be glad that someone as articulate as the food and travel correspondent for Esquire was the one so inspired. The author of a number of books on food and drink, Mariani has written an immensely interesting, illustrated survey of restaurants from colonial times to the present time, when fast-food eateries have catapulted the industry to the rank of third largest in the country.

WALES

  1. Gliffaes
Crickhowell Powys. The third generation of the same family owns and warmly manages this smart yet informal hotel. Set in large grounds and with stunning views of the river Usk, the Victorian Italianate house has its own salmon and trout fishing and a first-class kitchen.
  2. Penally Abbey
Penally, Pembrokeshire. As soon as you walk through the door, your spirits rise, so warm is this delightful Strawberry Hill Gothic house and so hospitable its owners. Try for one of the cottagey bedrooms in the old Coach House.
  3. Pen-y-Gwryd
Nant Gwynant, Gwynedd. Endearingly old-fashioned and warmly welcoming, this climbing inn has been in the hands of the same family for more than 60 years. Thankfully, little has changed from the hearty cooking to the simple, spotless bedrooms. Open weekends only in January and February.
  4. Plas Bodegroes
Pwllheli, Gwynedd. Take tea on the veranda or a turn around the peaceful gardens at this romantic Georgian house. Dinners, prepared by the Michelin-starred owner chef, are innovative yet unfussy, and bedrooms are contemporary with beds to sink into and goose-down duvets.
  5. West Arms
Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog, Denbighshire. After a day’s hiking in the Berwyn Hills, take refuge in this inn known for its excellent, robust food. Inside, it’s all flagstones, beams and crackling fires in inglenooks. Bedrooms in the main building are the cosiest.

The heart and soul of England

When you think of central England, this is what I imagine to be typically English. Quaint villages, miles of rolling, flat countryside and cornfields, winding roads, quiet waterways and traditional English country pubs where you can enjoy real pub food. Yet, aside from the Cotswolds, there’s a diversity here, which can appeal to all pleasure seekers. Cities rich in culture, heritage and history.  Central England is a hub of fabulous shops, theatres and galleries - plenty to stir your mind.

You’ll find dreamy Oxford and bard inspired Stratford-upon-Avon, enjoy a slice of historic Warwick or elegant Cheltenham. What’s great about Central England is the road network. Wherever you decide to stay, you’ll be able to get to all the area’s fabulous attractions really easily.
